Take my client Dunja. Dunja is a highly successful professional in the financial services industry. Yet one area she has always struggled with, is her confidence when it comes to speaking up in gatherings and presenting. When she learned she would have to present on stage in front of a couple hundred people, she experienced the symptoms so many of us are all too familiar with: fear, dread, sleeplessness, raised heart-rate just thinking of the event and a desire to get away from the obligation to present.

However, despite its undeniable importance, too many of us find themselves plagued by self-doubt, paralyzed by the fear of failure, and trapped in the vicious cycle of negative self-talk. I too struggled with this for the majority of my life. At some point I found a way to portrait myself as confident to the outside world, despite that remaining at odds with my internal dialogue. I would like to share the first steps I took with you, to create the illusion of confidence today.


Five Tips to Propel Your Confidence

For the majority of my life, I myself struggled with confidence issues. While I managed to portrait myself as confident to the majority of people, it was not in line with my internal dialogue. I would like to share five tips that helped me to gradually build my confidence:

  1. Embrace Your Uniqueness: Recognize that you are an exceptional individual with a distinct set of talents, experiences, and qualities. Celebrate your uniqueness and embrace your imperfections, for it is in our quirks that true beauty lies.

  2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Adopt the mindset that sees challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. Shift your focus from fixed limitations to the boundless potential that lies within you, and watch your confidence soar.

  3. Rewire Your Self-Talk: Challenge the negative inner voice that undermines your self-belief. Replace self-criticism with self-compassion and affirmations that reinforce your strengths and capabilities. Remember, the language we use shapes our reality. Start to register your self-talk consciously. Catch yourself saying “I’m not worthy of this. / People like us never have money. / This is just the way it’s always going to be. / My back is killing me. / My house is always a mess. / I can’t do that.”, etc. Say instead: "I deserve this. / People change their destiny all the time. / This too shall pass and wonderful blessings are on their way to me. / My back is healing and getting stronger every day. / I am excellent at organising. / I am learning how to do this.", etc.

  4. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: True confidence is nurtured through experience. Push beyond the boundaries of familiarity, face your fears, and embrace the discomfort of growth. Every step forward, no matter how small, fuels your confidence. We all hate what is unfamiliar and like what is familiar. That is why change is so difficult to achieve, because our mind and bodies are working against our intention to change. But you can take small steps to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, by doing something that is uncomfortable, unpleasant, and unfamiliar. This teaches your mind that change is not deadly and that you enjoy change. Start small, such as attending an event alone or sitting down in a restaurant by yourself. You can start as small as you wish to: talk to a stranger, book that group fitness class you have always wanted to try, put on that outfit in the back of your closet. Acknowledge any discomfort that may arise and be proud of yourself for pushing ahead.

  5. Cultivate a Supportive Tribe: Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and inspire you. Seek out mentors, friends, or coaches who believe in your potential and encourage your growth. Remember, your environment shapes your mindset and you are most influenced by the three people who you spend most time with. What is their motivation and how do they see the world? Does this align with who you are?
